EU to Consider Tightening Coronavirus Vaccine Export Ban

The European Union will consider tightening its export ban to stop vaccines going to countries that aren’t exporting doses to it, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Wednesday.
Without providing details or a timeline for decisions, Ms. von der Leyen highlighted the U.K., which is the EU’s top vaccine export destination, but which isn’t sending any doses to the EU.
“All options are on the table,” she said in a press conference. “We are in the crisis of the century and I’m not ruling out anything for now.”
Struggling with its vaccination rollout, the EU introduced a mechanism in late January that allowed member states to stop vaccine exports outside the bloc. Since then, only one export batch has been banned.
The EU has sent around 10 million vaccines to the U.K. since then.
